The Openings Mitigation Bank, Inc. has developed a private, commercial wetland mitigation bank in Eel River Township, Allen County, Indiana. The Openings Wetland Mitigation Bank – Phase I and II include restoration of hydrology and vegetation within a drained muck agriculture field complex.
Goals and Objectives
The Bank will compensate for impacts to the functions and services of impacted wetlands and other aquatic resources through the re-establishment of a protected high quality wetland communities. Native vegetation characteristic of emergent, forested and scrub-shrub wetland ecosystems chosen to restore historical wetland complexes within the Eel River Valley. Upon completion, the Bank is expected to provide flood water storage, storm abatement, aquifer protection and recharge, improved water quality, increased aesthetic value, nutrient cycling, and habitat for a variety of animals and waterfowl.
Using a watershed approach to provide compensatory mitigation, the Bank aims to assist in the achievement of the national goal of “no net loss” of wetland acreage and function through the restoration (re-establishment) of high quality and biologically diverse habitats native to our region.
